Professional Surge Protection

Electrical Testing UK supplies and installs surge protection devices (SPDs) for commercial and industrial sites. Transient overvoltages from lightning, switching operations and inductive loads are a real threat. As a result, they can cause immediate damage or long-term degradation of electrical and electronic equipment.

Moreover, the 18th Edition of BS 7671 requires an assessment for SPD protection in all new and rewired installations. Therefore surge protection is now a standard part of modern electrical design. We assess the risk, specify the appropriate SPD type and rating, and then carry out installation and certification.

How Our Service Works

Legionella Testing

Risk Assessment and SPD Specification

We assess overvoltage risk and specify the correct SPD type, rating, and location to BS 7671 and BS EN 62305.

All SPD Types and Locations

We install Type 1, 2, and 3 SPDs across incoming supplies, distribution boards, and sensitive circuits.

commercial and industrial Installation

SPDs are fitted in Commercial, Industrial, and Public Sector systems, fully compliant and certified.

New Installations and Retrofits

We install SPDs in new systems or add protection to existing installations.

Combined with Lightning Protection

We coordinate SPD and lightning protection systems where both are required.

Surge Protection for Every Property Type

We install surge protection systems tailored to the type of property and risk level. As a result, your electrical equipment stays protected from transient overvoltages.

  • Commercial premises and distribution boards: We install Type 2 SPDs in distribution boards. Therefore we protect modern premises with smart systems, EV chargers, heat pumps and sensitive electronics.
  • Coordinated protection: For sensitive systems, we install Type 2 devices at main boards and Type 3 devices downstream. In addition, this protects IT, CCTV, fire alarms and access control.
  • Industrial sites and equipment: We specify SPD systems for high-load environments. As a result, motor controls, drives and process equipment stay protected from internal and external surges.
  • Buildings with lightning protection: We install coordinated Type 1, 2 and 3 SPDs. Therefore lightning-induced surges entering via the earthing and bonding system are managed safely.

Surge Protection Installation: FAQs

How is the need for surge protection assessed?
First, we assess transient overvoltage risk using BS EN 62305-2. We consider lightning risk, supply type, nearby overhead lines and equipment sensitivity. As a result, we can specify the correct SPD type, rating and locations.

Where are surge protection devices installed?
We install SPDs at the main incoming board. In addition, we fit them at sub-boards or circuit level where required. In every case, we follow BS 7671 and manufacturer requirements, with correct connections and full system verification.

What certification is provided after installation?
You receive full certification, either a Minor Works or Electrical Installation Certificate, detailing all SPDs installed. Moreover, where the work forms part of a wider system, we provide documentation for the complete protection scheme.

Why commercial premises & Businesses Choose Our Surge Protection Service

  • Risk-based specification: We assess the actual overvoltage risk before specifying SPDs. Therefore we avoid a one-size-fits-all approach.
  • BS 7671 compliance: All our installations meet 18th Edition requirements for device type, rating and installation parameters. As a result, performance is correct and verifiable.
  • All property types covered: From single commercial distribution boards to complex industrial systems, we design and install appropriate protection for every scale.
  • Integrated lightning protection: Where required, we deliver coordinated lightning and surge protection systems under a single contract.
  • Qualified in-house engineers: Our NICEIC-qualified engineers complete all work. Moreover, we do not subcontract.
