Emergency Lighting: FAQs

What is emergency lighting and why is it a legal requirement?
Emergency lighting is a battery-backed system that activates during a power failure to light escape routes and exits. Because the law treats it as essential, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires it in commercial buildings. Therefore, you must maintain and test it to BS 5266-1.

How often must emergency lighting be tested?
You should run a short functional test every month. In addition, you must carry out a full three-hour discharge test once a year. Finally, you record every result in a logbook.

Where is emergency lighting required?
You need it on escape routes, staircases and final exits. Moreover, you need it near fire equipment, in plant rooms, and anywhere people could become disorientated during a power failure.

What happens when testing identifies faults?
First, we identify any failed units, battery issues or wiring faults. Then we repair them promptly. As a result, your system returns to full compliance.
